Purulia Mask, West Bengal

Wooden masks of West Bengal play an important role in the social and cultural activities of the state. Masks produced in the district of Purulia are often used in Chhau dance, and those made in Malda by Gambhira artists during their folk performances. Chhau masks are distinct in the way they represent gods, goddesses, and mythological characters, vividly painted to portray evil spirits and demons. Softwood masks made in the hilly areas of West Bengal, as well as Darjeeling and Tibet, play an important part in theatre craft and ritualistic dance performances. The artisans are generally wood-carvers by caste and inhabit two or three centers in Purulia. Initially, masks were carved out of Simul wood, but later cheap materials were introduced to cater to a broader market.
