Gombe Sculpture, Karnataka

220,000.00

Gombe sculptures are locally known as Gaarudi Gombe meaning magical dolls in Kannada. They have evolved through the years and are usually huge, and can be as tall as 12 feet high. The origin stories of this art form can be found in the epics like Mahabharata where Krishna is said to have pacified his wife Satyabhama who was angry with him by wearing a Gaarudi Gombe doll. It is one of many such stories that establish the relevance of the Gombe sculptures. Such sculptures are primarily used in Karnataka in folk dances during major festivals. The dancers don these dolls during their performances. While the dolls used during such performances are made with bamboo sticks and paper mache, they are no less in weight.
